Blockbuster movie shuts down Newport Road for filming
Mark Wahlberg’s new movie, Infinite, has turned Cardiff City Centre into a film set over the weekend as shooting continues.
Newport Road, in Cardiff, was closed from Saturday, October 26th to Tuesday, October 29th.
Many changes were made to Newport Road to make it look more like New York city including NYPD cop cars, American traffic lights and a military Jeep.
Fans also got to witness a high-speed chase with an Aston Martin surrounded by gunfire.
The road closures were between Fitzalan Place and City Road.
Despite Mark Wahlberg being the lead in the upcoming film there have been no sightings of him during filming.
Fans have posted on twitter hoping to get a glimpse of the actor – Becky Stone tweeted ‘Newport Road and the Mercure is New York City. It seems it's cheaper to film here and make it New York than film in New York. Sadly no Mark.’
Stewards have also been put in place to ensure that traffic and pedestrian management runs smoothly whilst the production is there.
But not everyone is happy, Craig Davies posted on Twitter ‘Anyone know what’s going on Newport road? One of the busiest roads into Cardiff is all closed off! Been a nightmare!.’
Cardiff Council has given permission for the road to be closed during half term, as research shows that traffic flow during the holiday period is much lower than usual.
Infinite joins the long list of productions that have been filmed in Cardiff over the years such as Doctor Who, Torchwood and the upcoming HBO/BBC TV series, His Dark Materials.
The film is an adaptation of the 2009 novel, The Reincarnationist Papers by D. Eric Maikranz.
Other members of the cast include Jason Mantzoukas, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Dylan O’Brien.
The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua known for the Equalizer movies and is scheduled to be released August 7th 2020 by Paramount Pictures.
