Campuses to hold events for Trans Day of Remembrance this Wednesday

Events will be held at USW campuses this week, to remember those who have lost their lives as a result of transphobia.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed on November 20th each year, and is also used as a time to raise awareness of the continued violence endured by transgender people.

Coffee mornings will be held at the Newport, Cardiff and Treforest campuses, between 9:30am and 11:15am, with a Pledge Signing also taking place at the Newport campus.

Silences will be observed at all three events, at 11 o'clock, with the Trans Flag being lowered to half mast on campus in Treforest.

USW LGBTQ+ Society President, Kay Dennis, said: "The day is an important one in the LGBTQ+ calendar as it allows us to reflect on the lives lost too soon, but also to make a promise to do better, that we stand up for our rights if we are able to, and that we start enforcing positive change.

"It's important that we take care of our trans friends, siblings and colleagues over this time, as the current media barrage of transphobia, as well as the rise of transphobic hate crimes means that we [the trans community] are at a greater risk of becoming victims of hate crimes and transphobia.

"It's also important that non-trans people reflect on the day, as "allies" are so important in this day and age. Allies are people who stand up for and with the community, challenging transphobia and fighting for our rights to exist as equal citizens."

Everyone is welcome to attend the events, and full details (including specific locations) can be found below.
