Merthyr Town boss thrilled by signing of Newport defender

Merthyr Town manager Gavin Williams says he is thrilled by the loan signing of Newport County defender Jay Foulston amidst the club’s injury struggles.

The Martyrs currently have the second-best goal difference in the Evo-Stik League South Premier Division South, but Williams has strengthened his defensive options with centre-back Craig McDonnell likely to be out for three months with a shoulder injury.

Foulston has made two appearances for Newport so far this season against Chelsea U23’s and Cheltenham Town in the CheckaTrade Trophy.

In an official statement, Williams said: “I am delighted to sign Jay until the end of the season.

“Obviously we need to strengthen the team following Macca’s injury, and I would like to thank Mike Flynn and the staff at Newport County for agreeing to the loan.”

Foulston has previously made five appearances internationally for Wales, both for the U17 and U19s.

The 19-year-old said: “I am delighted to have joined Merthyr on loan and I can’t wait to get started.

“Hopefully, I can help them push on for promotion and gain valuable experience while I am with the club.”

Merthyr Town are next in action on Saturday as they visit struggling side Wimborne Town.
