Microwaves arrive for students in Newport, Cardiff and Treforest

Students at the university will be able to heat their own food from today, following the introduction of microwaves on campuses.

The first microwave was switched on at the Newport campus (Food Court, B Floor) during a Facebook Live broadcast by SU President Mish Wick and Welfare Officer Shannon Lee.

Mish said: “As graduates, we have seen and experienced first-hand the struggles students face when it comes to eating on campus. Not all students can afford food on campus, and some simply don’t have the time to wait, so we understood that getting microwaves would help massively to improve your student experience and save some pennies.”

Students at Treforest will have access to microwaves in J Block, with those in Cardiff able to use the ones currently in staff kitchens (CAA105A/CAA401A) - Glyntaff are currently without the facility, but the SU are hoping these microwaves will be in place "soon".

The introduction of microwaves comes as part of SU Change Week - a Students Union initiative that allows those studying to put forward ideas that can go onto be developed, pitched to the university and then implemented if successful.

Throughout the last academic year, the lack of a facility to heat food purchased from outside of the university was one of the running themes.

Students have been encouraged to adhere to the usage guidelines, and if they find any faults or have concerns to contact the Estates Helpdesk on 01443 48222.

SU Change Week takes place in the first week of December. Until then, find out more information and see what other proposals are being worked on here.
