Youth at forefront of Wales Women’s Squad
Wales Women’s football manager, Jayne Ludlow, has put youth at the forefront of her team who travel to Italy for a friendly game next week.
The squad, announced on Tuesday, includes eight players under the age of 21 as well as experienced players including Hayley Ladd, who could earn her 50th cap.
Ludlow has also recalled Loren Dykes and Jess Fishlock into her 24-player squad in the hope of inspiring the younger members.
Ella Powell, 18, a defender in the squad, believes there are limited opportunities in Wales when it comes to club level football. She said: “The thing is with growing up in Wales is in terms of clubs there’s not a lot going for girls.”
Elise Hughes, 17, is one of the youngest members of the squad and is looking forward to joining the more experienced players. She said: “They’re always great with you and make you feel involved. They make sure you come out of your shell. It’s like your family.”
The match will be crucial preparation in the run-up to the UEFA Women’s Euro 2021 qualifying campaign. Wales missed out on qualification for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Italy will be a tough opponent for Ludlow’s side and the game kicks off at 7PM on the 22nd January in the Stadio Dino Manuzzi in Cesena. You can watch it live on social media.
